Old And New
London’s St Paul’s Cathedral is an icon. Built by Sir Christopher Wren in the wake of the Great Fire of 1666 (completed in 1708). There have been other cathedrals on the site, but this one was the icon seen above the smoke and fire of World War II.
The Millennium Footbridge seen in this same shot was built in celebration of the arrival of the 21st century. It connects Bankside and the City of London, the opposite sides of the Thames. It was completed in June, 2000 but suffered a noticeable wobble and was closed, repaired, and reopened in 2002.
London is a city unafraid of mixing old and new like this and the results are usually dramatic.
